Cooling System Water Temperature Regulator - Replace
SMCS - 1355-510; 1393-010
Replace the thermostat on a regular basis in order to reduce the chance of unscheduled downtime and of
problems with the cooling system. Failure to replace the engine's thermostat on a regularly scheduled basis
could cause severe engine damage.
The thermostat should be replaced after the cooling system has been cleaned. Replace the thermostat while
the cooling system is completely drained or while the cooling system coolant is drained to a level that is
below the thermostat housing.
Caterpillar engines incorporate a shunt design cooling system. It is mandatory to always operate the engine
with a thermostat.
1. Open the engine access door. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Access Doors and
Covers".
2. Drain the coolant from the machine. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant
(ELC) - Change" for the procedure to drain the cooling system.
