Troubleshooting Section
Repair: Add oil to the engine.
STOP.
Test Step 3. Che
ck the Engine Oil Level
on Caterpilla
r Electronic Technician ( ET)
A. Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
B. Turn the k eyswitch to the ON position.
C. Observe the “E
ngine Oil Level” reading on Cat ET.
Expected Result:
The “Engine Oil Level” reads “OK”.
Results:
•
OK – The “Engine Oil Level” reads “OK”.
Repair: Theswitchsignaliscorrect.
STOP.
•
Not OK – The “Engine Oil Level” does not read
“OK”. The swi
tch signal is not correct. Proceed to
Test Step 4.
Test Step 4. S
hort the Wires at the Low
Oil Level Swi
tch
A. Disconnect the connector for the low oil level
switch.
B. Use a wire to short terminal terminal 1 to terminal
2. Install t
he wire jumper on the harness side of
the connector.
C. Turn the key
switch to the ON position.
D. Observe the status of the “Engine Oil Level” on
Cat ET.
E. Removethewireshort.
F. Observe the status of the “Engine Oil Level” on
Cat ET.
G. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Expected R
esult:
Cat ET indicates “OK” when the wire short is
installed
. Cat ET indicates “LOW” when the wire short
is removed.
Results:
•
OK –CatETindicates“OK”,whenthewireshort
is in place. Cat ET indicates “LOW”, when the wire
short is remov
ed. Cat ET recognized the input from
the switch.
Repair: Te mpo
rarily replace the switch. Verify
that a new switch solves the problem before you
permanently install the new switch.
STOP.

Not OK – Cat ET
does not indicate “OK”, when
the wire short is in place. Cat ET does not indicate
“LOW”, when the wire short is removed. Cat ET
does not reco
gnize the input from the switch.

Test Step 5. S
hort the Input Wires of
the Low Oil L
evel Switch at the ECM
Connector
A. Disconnect
ECM connector P1.
B. Remove the wire from P1-22 (low oil level). Install
awirejumpe
rwithasocketononeendintoP1-29.
C. Remove the wire from P2-66 (digital return). Install
awirejump
er with a socket on one end into P2-20.
D. Connect a wire jumper between the wire jumpers
in P1-22 an
d P2-66.
E. Reconnect all connectors.
F. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Note: Addi
tional diagnostic codes will be generated
because the digital return will no longer be connected
to the other sensors and switches. Ignore the codes
and clear t
he codes when you complete this test.
G. Observe the status of the “Engine Oil Level” on
Cat ET.
H. Remove the wire short.
I. Reconnect all connectors.
J. Observe t
he status of the “Engine Oil Level” on
Cat ET.
K. Turn the k
eyswitch to the OFF position.
L. Reconnect all connectors.
