Test Step 3. Create an Open at the
Connector for the Wastegate Solenoid
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect th
e connector for the wastegate
solenoid.
C. Turn the keysw
itch to the ON position.
D. Proceed to the “Diagnostic Overrides” screen on
Cat ET.
E. Select the override for the wastegate solenoid on
Cat ET.
F. Set the override for the wastegate solenoid to 100
percent.
G. Check for a 05 diagnostic code for the wastegate
solenoid.
Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the
diagnostic
codes to become active.
H. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Expected Result:
A 05 diagnost
ic code is now active for the wastegate
solenoid.
Results:
•
OK – A 06 diagnostic code was active before
disconnect
ing the connector. A 05 diagnostic code
became active after disconnecting the connector.
The engine harness and the ECM are OK.
Repair: Temporarily connect a new wastegate
solenoid to the harness, but do not install the
new wasteg
ate solenoid. Verify that there are no
active diagnostic codes for the wastegate solenoid.
If there are no active diagnostic codes for the
wastegate
solenoid, permanently install the new
wastegate solenoid. Clear any logged diagnostic
codes.
STOP.
•
Not OK – A 0
6 diagnostic code remains active.
There is a short between the connector for the
wastegate solenoid and the ECM. Leave the
connecto
r for the wastegate solenoid disconnected.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Test Step
4. Create a Shor t at the
Connect
or for the Wastegate Solenoid
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Install a jumper wire between terminal 1 and
terminal 2 of th
e connector for the wastegate
solenoid.
C. Turn the keysw
itch to the ON position.
D. Proceed to the “Diagnostic Overrides” screen on
Cat ET.
E. Select the override for the wastegate on Cat ET.
F. Set the override for the wastegate to 100 percent.
G. Wait at least 3
0 seconds for activation of the 06
diagnostic code.
H. Turn the keysw
itch to the OFF position. Remove
the wire jumper.
Expected Resu
lt:
A 06 diagnostic code is active when the jumper wire
is installed
. A 05 diagnostic code is active when the
jumper wire is removed.
Results:
•
OK – A 06 diagnostic code is active when the
jumper wire i
s installed. A 05 diagnostic code
is active when the jumper wire is removed. The
engine harness and the ECM are OK.
Repair: Temporarily connect a new wastegate
solenoid to the harness, but do not install the
new wastega
te solenoid. Verify that there are no
active diagnostic codes for the wastegate solenoid.
If there are no active diagnostic codes for the
wastegate
solenoid, permanently install the new
wastegate solenoid. Clear any logged diagnostic
codes.
STOP.
•
Not OK – The
05 diagnostic code remains active
with the jumper in place. There is an open circuit
between the ECM and the connector for the
wastegat
e solenoid. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Test Step 5. Test the Operation of the
ECM
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Fabricat
ejumperwiresthatcanbeusedto
replace the wire(s) in the ECM connector for the
wastegate solenoid. Crimp a connector socket to
one end o
f the jumper wires.
C. Disconnect the appropriate ECM connector for
the wast
egate solenoid.
D. Remove the wire(s) for the wastegate solenoid
from the
ECM connector.
