Troubleshooting Section
Note: Wait at least 15 seconds in order for the
diagnostic cod
es to become active.
Expected Result:
Only the 261-13 diagnostic code is active.
Results:
•
OK – The 261-13 is the only active code at this
time. Proceed
to Test Step 2.
•
Not OK – The 261-13 is not the only active code
at this time.
Repair: Repair any active diagnostic codes. Other
active diagno
stic codes will cause the calibration
procedure to fail.
STOP.
Test Step 2. Calibration
Note: The engine speed/timing sensor is calibrated
through a two-step process. A new timing reference
is calculate
d first. The reference is based on
the signals from the transducer and the engine
speed/timing sensor. Next, the new timing reference
is programm
ed into the permanent memory of the
engine’s ECM.
A. Select “Ser
vice” from the main menu on Cat ET.
Select “Calibrations” from the drop-down menu.
Select “Timing Calibration”.
B. Press the “Continue” button on Cat ET.
Note: Engi
ne speed will be set to 800 rpm by the
ECM during the calibration procedure.
Cat ET will
indicate “Please wait...Calculating the
new Timing Reference”. After a few moments,
Cat ET will display “The ECM has calculated the
Timing Ref
erence” and “Choose the Continue
button to program the Timing Reference”.
Note: If th
e Cat ET screen shows “CALIBRATION
UNSUCCESSFUL”, the electronic injection timing
has not been set.
Expected Result:
The Cat ET
screen shows “CALIBRATION
SUCCESSFUL”.
Results:
•
OK – The timing calibration was successful.
Repair: Disconnect the timing calibration probe
before you exit
the “Timing Calibration” screen
on Cat ET. Reset the system and check for any
diagnostic codes.
STOP.
•
Not OK – The tim
ing did not calibrate.
Repair: Excessive backlash in the engine gear
train will cau
se inconsistent timing. Refer to the
Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting manual
for information on engine timing.
STOP.
