Troubleshooting Section
6. Check the fuel pressure after the fuel filter while
the engine is be
ing cranked. Refer to the Systems
Operation/Testing and Adjusting manual for the
correct pressure values. If the fuel pressure is low,
replace the fu
el filters. If the fuel pressure is still
low, check the following items: fuel transfer pump,
fuel transfer pump coupling, and fuel pressure
regulating v
alve.
Air S hutoff Valves (if applicable)
1. Verify that the air shutoff valves are open.
2. Check for res
trictions in the air inlet system. Refer
to the Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting
manual for information on the air inlet system.
Low Idle
Check the low
idle setting.
Accessory Equipment
Check all accessory equipment for problems that
may create excessive load on the engine. Repair
any damaged
components or replace any damaged
components.

Recommended Actions
Batteries and/or Batte ry Cables
1. Inspect the mai
n power switch, battery posts,
and battery cables for loose connections and
for corrosion. If the battery cables are corroded,
remove the bat
tery cables and clean the battery
cables. Tighten any loose connections.
2. Inspect the ba
tteries.
a. Charge the batteries. Refer to Special
Instruction
, SEHS7633, “Battery Test
Procedure”.
b. Load test the
batteries. Refer to Special
Instruction, SEHS9249, “Use of 4C-4911
Battery Load Tester for 6, 8 and 12 Volt Lead
Acid Batter
ies”.
Starting Motor Solenoid or Starting
Circuit
1. Check the operation of the engine start switch.
Monitor the
engine start switch on Cat ET.
Refer to the appropriate troubleshooting test that
is applicab
le to your engine if repairs are required.
2. Test the operation of the starting motor solenoid.
3. Check the wiring to the starting motor solenoid.
Starting M
otor or F lywheel Ring Gear
1. Test the operation of the starting motor.
2. Inspect the solenoid on the starter and the
flywheel ring gear for damage.
Prelubrication System (if applicable)
If equippe
d, inspect the prelubrication system for
proper operation.
Shutdown S
witch
Use Cat ET to monitor the status of the engine.
Check for “
ACTIVE” shutdowns due to shutdown
switches. Determine the cause for the “ACTIVE”
shutdown and make any repairs necessary.
Crank Enable Switch (if applicable)
Ensure th
at the crank enable switch is not faulty.
