Troubleshooting Section
Repair: The ECM detected the open circuit at
the relay conne
ctor. The problem must be in the
connector for the suspect relay or the problem
must be in the relay assembly.
STOP.
•
NotOK –The06d
iagnostic code is still active for
the suspect relay. Proceed to Test Step 7.
Test Step 7. Te
st the O peration of the
ECM
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Fabricate jumper wires that can be used to replace
the wire(s) in the ECM connector for the suspect
relay. Crimp
a connector socket to one end of the
jumper wires.
C. Disconnect t
he appropriate ECM connector for
the suspect relay.
D. Remove the w
ire(s) for the suspect relay from the
ECM connector.
E. Install the
jumper wire(s) into the terminal
location(s) for the suspect relay at the ECM
connector.
F. Connect the ECM connectors.
G. Check the op
eration of the ECM by creating
an open at the ECM:
a. Hold the lo
ose end of the jumper wire away
from any components in order to create an
open circuit condition.
b. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
c. Monitor th
e “Active Diagnostic Code” screen
on Cat ET.
Check the s
uspect relay for an active 05
diagnostic code.
Note: Wait
at least 30 seconds so that any codes
may become active.
d. Turn the k
eyswitch to the OFF position.
H. Check the operation of the ECM by creating a
short cir
cuit at the ECM:
a. If the suspect relay is the ether start relay, short
the jumpe
rs for the return wire and the output
wire together.
If the sus
pect relay is the ether hold relay, short
the jumper for the return wire to the +Battery.
b. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
c. Select the “Diagnostic Tests” on Cat ET.
NOTICE
Do not allow the
ether injection system to be on for
more than two minutes. Damage to the ether solenoid
may occur.
d. Select the “Override Parameters” screen on
Cat ET.
e. Activate the ether override.
f. Monitor the “A
ctive Diagnostic Code” screen
on Cat ET.
Check the susp
ect relay for an active 06
diagnostic code.
Note: Wait at
least 30 seconds so that any codes
may become active.
g. Disable the e
ther override.
h. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
I. Removethejumperwire.Returnallwiringtothe
original configuration.
Expected Result:
A 05 diagnost
ic code is active when the wires or
wire from the suspect relay are open at the ECM
connector. A 06 diagnostic code is active if the wires
or wire from
the suspect relay are shorted at the
ECM connector.
Results:
•
OK – A 05 diagnostic code is active when the
wires or wir
e from the suspect relay are open at
the ECM connector. A 06 diagnostic code is active
when the wires or wire from the suspect relay are
shorted at t
he ECM connector.
Repair: The ECM is operating properly.
If the suspect relay is the ether start relay, the
problem is in the harness wiring between the ECM
and the con
nector for the relay. Repair the wires
or wire.
If the susp
ect relay is the ether hold relay, the
problem is in the harness wiring between the ECM
and the connector for the relay or in the harness
wiring be
tween the battery and the ether hold relay.
Repair the wire.
