Troubleshooting Section
Valve Lash
Check the valve lash. Refer to the diagnostic
procedure Troubleshooting, “Too Much Valve Lash”.
Damage to Va lve Train Components
Remove the val
ve cover from the suspect cylinder(s).
Check the following items for damage: camshaft,
valve rotocoil, valve springs, lifters, pushrods, and
bridges. Chec
k for valves that do not move freely.
Remove the cylinder head. Inspect the valves.
Replace any damaged parts.
Failure of Connecting Rod Bearing
Inspect the c
onnecting rod bearings and the bearing
surfaces (journals) on the crankshaft. Check the
piston pin for excessive wear. Replace any damaged
parts.

Engine Speed/Timing Sensor(s)
Check the calibration of the engine speed/timing
sensor if a CID-FMI 261-13 Engine Timing calibration
required d
iagnostic code is active. Refer to the
calibration procedure Troubleshooting, “Engine
Speed/Timing Sensor - Calibrate”.
Electrical Connectors
Check for the correct installation of the connectors
for the Electronic Control Module (ECM) J1/P1
and/or J2/P2.
Check for the correct installation
of the applicable fuel injector connectors. Repair
the connector and/or replace the connector. Refer
to the diagno
stic functional test Troubleshooting,
“Inspecting Electrical Connectors”.
Injector
Check for active diagnostic codes that are associated
with the circ
uits for the fuel injector. Check that the
injector trim codes have been entered. Perform
the “Injector Solenoid Test”. Verify that the ECM is
energizing a
ll the injector solenoids. Refer to the
diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, “Injector
Solenoids”.
Fuel Sup ply
1. Check the fu
el lines for the following problems:
restrictions, collapsed lines, and pinched lines. If
problems are found with the fuel lines, repair the
lines and/
or replace the lines.
2. Check the fuel tank for foreign objects which may
block the f
uel supply.
3. Prime the fuel system if any of the following
procedure
s have been performed:
•
Replacement of the fuel filters
•
Service on the low pressure f uel supply circuit
•
Replaceme
nt of unit injectors
Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual
for the cor
rect procedure.
Note: A sight glass in the fuel supply line is helpful in
diagnosi
ng air in the fuel.

of the fue

Maintenance Manual for information on improving
the characteristics of the fuel during cold weather
operatio
n.
