Most intermittent problems are the result of a bad
connection between a socket and a pin in a connector
or a bad conne

c code has been logged.
Expected Result:
No diagnostic code is active for the exhaust
temperature sensors.
Results:

OK –Nodiagno
stic codes are active.
Repair: If the problem is intermittent, refer to
Troublesho
oting, “Inspecting Electrical Connectors”
for the correct procedures for inspecting electrical
connectors.
STOP.
•
Not OK – A dia
gnostic code is active or the
diagnostic code is logged several times. Proceed
to Test Step 2.
Test Step 2. Perform t he “Wiggle Test”
on Cat ET
A. Select the
“Wiggle Test” from the diagnostic tests
on Cat ET.
B. Choose the
appropriate group of parameters to
monitor.
C. Press the “
Start” button. Wiggle the wiring harness
for the suspect sensor in order to reproduce an
intermittent problem.
If an intermittent problem is detected, the status will
be highlighted and an audible beep will be heard.
Expected Result:
No interm
ittent problems were detected during the
“Wiggle Test”.
Results:
•
OK – No intermittent problems were found. The
harness a
nd connectors appear to be OK. Proceed
to Test Step 3 and continue to troubleshoot the
active diagnostic code.
•
Not OK – At least one intermittent problem was
indicated.
Repair: Repair the harness or the connector. Refer
to the diagnos
tic functional test Troubleshooting,
“Inspecting Electrical Connectors”. Verify that the
repair eliminates the problem.
STOP.
Test Step 3. Ch
eck the Digital Supply
Voltage at th
e Sensor Connector
A. Disconnect the suspect sensor(s) at the sensor
connector:
B. Measure the voltage on the ECM side of the
sensor conne
ctor between pin A and pin B for the
suspect sensor(s).
Expected Res
ult:
The supply voltage is 8.0 ± 0.4 VDC.
Results:
•
OK – The supp
ly voltage is 8.0 ± 0.4 VDC.

Test Step 4.
Check the Digital S upply
Voltage at
the E CM
A. Remove power from the ECM.
B. Remove the supply wire from P1-4. Install a wire
jumper into the socket for P1-4.
C. Restore power to the ECM.
D. Measure th
e voltage between the wire jumper in
terminal P1-4 and engine ground.
E. Remove pow
er from the ECM.
F. Remove the wire jumper and reconnect all wires.
Reconnect
ECM connector J1/P1.
Expected Result:
The supply voltage is 8.0 ± 0.4 VDC.
Results:
•
OK – The supply voltage is 8.0 ± 0.4 VDC. The
supply vo
ltage at the ECM is correct. There is a
problem in the wiring between the ECM and the
sensor connector. Repair the connectors or wiring
and/or re
place the connectors or wiring.
