Some engine symptoms can be unrelated to the
electronic control system. Gather information about
the complaint that describes the symptoms. Verify
that the complaint is not due to normal engine
operation.
Perform the following steps in order to determine the
problem.
1. Repair all active diagnostic codes.
2. Gather operator information.
3. Verify that the complaint is not due to normal
engine operation.
4. Perform a visual inspection of the engine. Inspect
the following items:
•
Wiring
•
Connectors
•
Fuel level
•
Fuel supply
•
Engine oil level
•
Engine oil supply
•
Coolant level
•
Intake air system
•
Air exhaust system
5. Check the wiring and the connectors for the
following problems:
•
Damage
•
Abrasion
•
Corrosion
•
Incorrect attachment
6. Check for any logged diagnostic codes.
•
Determine if the logged diagnostic codes
correlate to pr
obable causes.
•
Determine if the logged diagnostic codes occur
at the same tim
e as the symptoms.
•
Determine if the logged diagnostic codes are
logged repeat
edly.
If these inspections do not reveal any problems, use
the procedure
that best describes the symptoms.

Recommended Actions
Alternator Drive Bel ts
1. Inspect the condition of the alternator drive belts. If
the belts are worn or damaged, replace the belts.
2. Check the tension on the belts. Adjust the tension,
if necessary.
3. Ensure that the belts are in proper alignment.
Inspect the alternator mounting bracket for cracks
and wear. Repair the mounting bracket or replace
the mounting bracket in order to ensure that the
belts and the alternator drive pulley are aligned.
Alternator Drive Pulley
Check the condition of the alternator drive pulley.
Look for deep grooves that have been worn into the
pulley by the belt. If there is excessive wear, replace
the pulley. Check that the nut for the pulley has not
become loose. If necessary, tighten the nut.
Alternator Bearings
Check the alternator bearings for signs of wear.
Repair the alternator or replace the alternator, as
needed.
